6 Crazy Frustrating Things Only Guitarists Truly Understand

Written by Billy Saefong

So I’ve played guitar for a little bit and it’s great, it’s fantastic, but there are little moments as a guitar player that are simply rage inducing and just plain frustrating to deal with. Stick with me here, these are some of the most frustrating things only guitarists truly understand.

YOU DON'T KNOW ANY DRUMMERS

How many times have you tried starting a band? Anyone who has tried this knows that when you get together with your buddies to talk about the future of The Bobby Flays (the name of your new country rock band), it ends up being a room full of guitars and the one bass player. Nobody plays drums when you need them to. They don’t exist, it’s a myth!

OLD STRINGS BREAKING AND GOING IN YOUR EYE (OR HAND)

True story. I once broke a string from tuning it up and when the string snapped, it snapped backward and hooked into my hand like a fish on a line! I still have a little scar on the back of my hand from it! Since this happened very early in my guitar learning years, I get incredibly anxious about tuning up old strings.

YOUR FINGERNAILS GROW FASTER WHEN YOU PLAY GUITAR

I don’t know about you, but for some reason, the nails on my fretting fingers tend to grow faster than normal. What. Is. Up. With. That!? There’s a feeling all guitar players know, when trying to play a chord and your nails hit the fretboard instead of the tips of your fingers. It is a strange, and uncomfortable. Just feels weird!

WHERE THE HECK IS THAT PICK?

No seriously, where is that pick? It was just in your hand, you just plucked out the entire solo of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” by The Beatles and now it’s gone. Maybe you dropped it in a flurry of furious picking and it was absorbed by the carpet. It doesn’t really matter if you have carpet, when the pick is gone, it’s gone.

THE PICK IS IN THE SOUNDHOLE

Don’t get me started, I can’t even.

NEW STRING JUST BROKE

But you just bought them! It’s the worst when you have fairly fresh strings on your axe and then one snaps. Best way to solve this? Get some nice D’addario or Elixir strings! You can never go wrong with those.
