I doubt anyone here has ever heard of him, but Bob Marinelli (based in Nashville) was my bass player while I was there the first time and I've never heard anyone better on any stage or recording anywhere.

I just watched the Showtime documentary about Jeff Beck called "Still on the Run". That's off topic but it reminded me about what a great bass player Tal Wilkenfeld is. Certainly no one seems to have more fun playing bass than she does.

Back in my strictly music listening days, pre-guitar learning, I was a huge jazz fan. As a result of that I was exposed to Stanly Clarke and still consider him one of the greatest bass players ever..

Yeah, Tal is pretty impressive, I agree on that one. Stanley Clarke is the first exposure I had to anyone that played the bass as the principal instrument in the band.

It takes as long as it takes unless you quit - then it takes forever and you will never get there.

Geddy (of course) and Les Claypool are probably at the top of my list. Flea is right up there as well. John Myung is also amazing.

I can't stop playing this bass cover of Everytime You Go Away by Marta Altesa.

Mainly for the fretless.

I'm tempted to buy one but might start off with a fretted. Probably one of the cheaper Hofners.
