The standard intro is to play the main riff or the chorus riff, then have a rest/break for a transition to the main part. You could however come up with something more interesting but it comes with practice.

:)
Sure prctice is the key

try playing the main riff with some crazy fx
also change it a bit
end it with some long bend or triller(speling?)

well these the first things I can think of
if you feel stuck work it out with your band or ask a friend player for an advice
That's what I'd do

Lick intros are fun but be careful not to overuse them or they loose their impact.

Whilst we're on the subject of intros, anyone got any favourites?

Certainly the first intro that comes in my mind is the one of Enter Sandman by Metallica

best intro would have to be master of puppets by far

i can not get over how cool that is, good ole tallica boyz
another cool as intro would have to be metallica's live version of fuel, with kirks car intro of course :)

Yeah metallica's intros usually get my attention although some are rather long.

...and yeah I keep going back to Rush but the fact is they're ****hot with intros....at least I think so. Check out Spirit of the Radio......first song of theirs I heard and I was like 'woa these guys can play!' Its really cool when that happens coz many times i've downloaded or bought my first taste of a band I've wondered what everyone was yelling about when I heard my first intro.

Another great intro is The Song Remains the Same (Zeppelin) Although lengthy there isnt a not wasted......I guess I like economy in music.

WHAHAAA..coool...

economy in music...

wel the first thing you hear is the usually the intro..so i think..when the intro is coool..most of the time the rest of the song is cool 2...but..metallica has often cool intro or intrulude etc... but..the rest of the song is borring...

but that all is mine opinion...

*LOL* my proble used to be that i had 5 million intros but no song afterwards *L* - but with time (and a second dued with whom you can jam) there will be alot of improvement in yer songwriting - the more you write songs, the more different types of music you listen to, the easier it will become to write interresting stuff with nice intros, inbetweentros *L* and outros... :D

Yes - because he/she has his/her own ideas and he/she will probably take a riff of yours and find a cool next part, completely different to what you expected it to tunr out - this can be very rewarding - but also very dissapointing when you have the wrong partner (guitarwise)

whatever you do, don't make the intro TOO exciting because then when it comes to the main bit of the song everyone's gonna expect something just as good

is definately The Crazy Train intro and is the main reason why I wanted to play guitar in the first place :-)
Another favorite intro is Dream Theaters Pull Me under.

...Answer to how to make an intro that has worked for me
is to play the main riff on a clean tone or acousticaly like in the song Enter Sandman (Metallica) and slowly merge into a distorted version of it or play the main rif acoustically and play a little intro solo over it or both.
Another way would be to play the main riff as the intro like Jake E. Lee does in the song Lightning Strikes by Ozzy Osbourne off the Ultimate Sin Album. The song is also by far one of my Favorite Ozzy songs.

A good way to get ideas for what works is just listen to any song that inspires you and try to do the same.

REMEMBER! There is NO right or wrong way to make an intro. If it sounds good to you then it is good and don't worry if someone else thinks it sucks...Not everyone will have the same tastes.

KEEPING ROCKEN AND HAVE FUN :-)
I started learning guitar because of Randy Rhoads..but Yngwie J. Malmsteen is my biggest influence.
