The Listening Post Spotlight

This month's spotlight shines on two pieces of Francisco Tarrega's compositions played by G.T. member, R. Shackleferd. Tarrega (1852-1909) was a Spanish guitarist widely considered to be a musical genius and virtuoso with respect to composing his own work and transcribing other pieces to guitar, always with a keen approach to voicing melodies and accompaniments. He has been highly influential to the status of the guitar and its repertoire for the last century, opening the way for Segovia and others to follow. Commonly known as Rustee, R. Shackleferd has been a member since December '04.
Track Info:

The tracks covered here, "Adelita" and "Study in E minor", were both recorded similarly; with an Ibanez nylon acoustic/electric into a PodXT (for reverb and USB connection), into Cakewalk Guitar-tracks Pro software for recording, final levels, and mixing. Finger-picking was absolutely necessary to achieve the combination of bass strings, chords, and melody. While the study was recorded continuously in one track, "Adelita" utilized punch-ins due to the higher difficulty of certain passages. These were then pasted together at the pauses to complete the song.
Review:

Both songs are short, but still pack a lot of melody. Several G.T. members have already been inspired by these tracks to give the classical genre a try. The "Study in E minor" is the easier, and should be approachable by players of any level. "Adelita" is more of a challenge, but still doesn't require virtuosic talent by any means compared to more technical pieces. Yet it also earned praise from G.T. instructor CSchlegel, who will be doing a lesson on it eventually, so full-access members can keep an eye out for that. Other Tarrega pieces have also already been covered (among other fine examples) in the classical lessons section.
