Gene Simmons is famous for saying rock is dead. I know he is referring to the old model with big labels, bands making money from album sales vs touring, but he is not the only one to have expressed this opinion.

But luckily there are bands like Chevelle who keep plodding along. The new release, if you haven't heard it, is a classic formula:

A driven beat with over driven guitars. Wonderful.

Rock lives on!

I will definitely check them out. This old rock guy is hopeful rock isn't dead. (But I remain not very optimistic)

Thank you for the recommendation @William MG !

Kind of begs the question (that I've asked myself many times) "what is rock?" Is it defined technically (e.g., a certain bpm range, strong backbeat, 3-5 minutes), is it high energy dance music, is it rebellion against your parents music, is it a genre through which sex is inexorbably if not explicity wound? All of those things taken together? Or is it like life or, as Justice Stewart famously wrote of pornography - "can't define it but I know it when I see [hear] it."

Good question Dave. And rock has had many iterations. For me, a kid growing up in the 70s, I guess I have a personal definition. But like you, I have wondered: what exactly is "rock"?

So here, as best as I can describe is my personal definition:

Its a vibe, that to me, was embodied when John Lennon yelled out "1234..."

A driven hard hitting sound, simple yet effective.

Yeah... about once a decade Rock is declared dead. And on it goes.

"It takes a lot of devotion and work, or maybe I should say play, because if you love it, that's what it amounts to. I haven't found any shortcuts, and I've been looking for a long time."

I think you are right John, as long as a kid can get a guitar we are probably going to be ok.
