5 Ways to Improvise on One Chord

Description

Let's start by looking at the diatonic chords or triads in the key of A minor. For this tutorial I've chosen the minor mode of Dorian, which has a #6 or in this case, an F#. This is a very common mode in a lot of funk, rock and blues. It gives you a slightly brighter or more up beat sound than the natural minor mode.

The diatonic chords in A Dorian are: A min, B min, C Maj, D Maj, E min, F# dim, and G Maj. We'll also be using inversions of these chords.

Because we're talking about playing over a single chord here I'll be using three string chord voicings in order to not conflict with the harmony.

The situation and instrumentation will dictate which inversions to use and how much sonic space to take up! So keep your ears open, try different approaches, don't be afraid to experiment and make mistakes, and above all, have fun!
