Description

Tony Rice combines the major and minor pentatonic shapes to get his signature lead sound. The most common way he does this is with the minor pentatonic shape that every guitar player knows. He moves this shape up and back three frets to get major and minor sounds. One of the keys of playing the Tony Rice style effectively is being able to play the major pentatonic scale with the open strings.

This lick uses that position for the major pentatonic scale and gets up into the minor pentatonic position at the third fret. It's a great lick for any bluegrass solo.
