This is an aggressive distorted hot-rodded marshall type sound that makes up the sound of most of this track. Use a guitar with a humbucker at the bridge position - volume and tone on full - wide open for maximum power and clarity. It is well known that Queensryche used Marshall Jubilee Amps for recording (the silver ones), so I used a Marshall J-900 model in the lesson:

Rhythm Sound Setting:

Drive 75%

Bass 45%

Mid 60%

Treble 45%

Presence 60%

Play with the Drive control to get a thick and powerful crunch tone if you feel it's not quite enough distortion. If it's still not enough, add a distortion/overdrive to give you more gain.

Lead Setting:

As above with 100% drive

Add some chorus, echo and reverb to really fill out the sound.

Suggested Effect Settings:

CHORUS

Speed 0.6 Hz

Depth 66%

Wet/DryMix 36%

DELAY

Time 425ms

Feedback 35%

Wet/DryMix 40%

REVERB

Wet/Dry 40%

Clean Setting:

For the clean guitar in the breakdown, switch to the middle pickup (if your guitar has one) to give it that "phasey" hollow sound. Switch to your amps clean channel, OR turn down the drive controls on your amp and leave just enough so the single notes ring strong with sustain (I set my drive control at 10%). Use the same effect settings for the chorus, delay, and reverb as above.
