Here's a simple chord progression that's been used behind some great solos, back and forth between the I and the IV chord. In this case the I chord is C and the IV chord is F. There are a few scales that will work against this particular rhythm. The C pentatonic major and C pentatonic minor scale work especially well. Try using the C dorian and C mixolydian scales as well.
