Description

The main riff in "Cat's in the Cradle" features a great melody that is very recognizable and singable. This melody is heard several times, and is the signature part of the song. To play this part in our tutorial, we are going to play the melody against an open F string ringing; playing the melody on the E, B and G strings. Here are some key points to help you play that riff, along with what we will be playing with our second acoustic guitar:

1. The melody rotates around an F major chord, playing a variety of notes on the G, B, and high E strings. With the capo, we will hit the F note and leave it ringing while we play the main melody.

2. The melody is played once each time, and you will hear it 4 times total throughout the song. The fourth time is played with a retard that we will look at later in the tutorial.

3. The main melody is two bars long; playing one bar of 4/4 and one of 3/4; 7 beats in total.

4. Once you play the main riff once, you then follow it with 2 bars of F major with a rotating bass the first time you play it. The second and third time is followed by one bar of F.
