GUITAR: Any guitar with a humbucker pickup in the bridge position is ideal for playing this tune, and will give you the maximum clarity and power for digging into these riffs.
AMP: A modern hi-gain tube amplifier is the preferred choice for this song. Set up your tone for plenty of hi-gain grungey crunch. To get all the dynamics in the tune, use a combination of playing harder/lighter along with using the volume knob on your guitar. In the verses, simply roll down your volume to clean up the sound a bit. Roll it back up for the big sections. Alternatively, you could channel switch between a cleaner and crunch channel if your amp provides that. Another way is to set your amp for a cleaner sound, then kick in an overdrive/distortion pedal for the crunch sections. Here are the amp and effect settings I used for this tutorial:

This tune plays in dropped C tuning. This means tune your guitar down one whole step, then drop the low string one more step to C. You may want to put heavier gauge strings on your guitar to make it easier for you to keep everything in tune.
