Guitar 1 plays the verse section with a combination of high power chords and open chords. Start out with a D power chord at the 7th fret of the G string, then move up 2 frets to get the E chord. Next is a G power chord, with the root at the 8th fret of the B string. Move up 2 frets to get the high A power chord. Each chord gets a single strum.

The second half of the verse starts off with the high A power chord, but moves down to grab the open D chord. Note the use of arpeggiation here to move the arrangement along. Then we play the open G, Em, and open A chords, same arpeggiated approach. The 4 bars on the A creates some great tension leading into the chorus!
