I'm using a Les Paul style guitar for this tutorial, but any guitar with a humbucker pickup in the bridge position will get close to the sound.

As far as amps go, any Marshall-style tube amp will do the trick. Crank up the preamp gain to maximum for some thick crunch. Guitar 2 is set for clean, and uses a chorus effect to thicken up the sound; this was a typical approach of the era. All guitars use some reverb to add depth to the parts. Check out the settings I used:

Marshall Plexi Model: Drive: 100% Bass: 40% Mid: 65% High: 50% Presence: 70% (Guitar 2 : set Drive for 35%)

Chorus: Rate: 25% Depth: 35% Wet/DryMIX: 45%

Spring Reverb: Wet/DryMIX: 60%
