The type of strumming I employ here is optional but very common when playing this style of music. It is supposed to be gentle and warm sounding, nothing forceful at all. It is, however, very important that your time and rhythm doesn't go all over the place because you are strumming lighter than usual. This is a very common bad habit amongst guitar players.

A really good way of practicing this is to just get a metronome out and practice just the strumming and the metronome, then remove the metronome and try to just feel the beats evenly.

As I mention in the video, I don't recommend counting the strumming pattern out more than needed, it just adds a level of difficulty that can easily be eradicated by simply getting the rhythm phrase ingrained in your mind. A good approach is to note how the strum rhythm matches the vocals.
