It's important that you pay attention to the differences in the verse and the intro here; even though the picking patterns are very similar, you're given very few chances in this song to convey any sort of statement on the guitar.

Granted, this song is more focused on the vocal, but that doesn't mean the guitar can't be expressive. Try to play around with swelling dynamics in and out to interplay with the vocals. This will create a nice feeling of emotions swelling with the lyrics.

Beware when playing around with dynamics though, it is very very easy to either speed up or slow down the tempo. Test yourself by sitting down with a metronome and go from quiet to loud and vice versa, and I'm sure you'll see how the inclination is to speed up when playing harder and slow down when you soften your picking.
