What's up, it's Mike from Guitar Tricks, teaching you "Casey Jones" as made famous by The Grateful Dead. This is jam-band rock classic with a steady straight groove and multiple clean electric guitar parts.

This song features 3 electric guitar layers. Guitar 1 is the main rhythm guitar that plays a great combination of chords and riffs throughout. Guitar 2 is an additional rhythm guitar, largely playing straight ahead strumming of the chord progression. Guitar 3 is the lead guitar that plays a melodic solo.

The tune starts out with a turnaround riff that is repeated throughout the song. Next, the chorus comes in and establishes the groove with a simple chord progression. Guitar 1 plays some great riffs in and around the vocals in this section. The verse features a similar approach from both guitars with a different chord progression. There is also a guitar solo that mimics the vocal melody with bluesy bends and lines.

To play this tune using only one guitar, play Guitar 1 all the way through, switching to Guitar 3 for the solo.

In the following lessons, we'll talk about barre chords, triads, chord inversions, syncopation, and steady rhythm strumming. We are in the key of C major, with a 4/4 time signature, at a tempo of 100 BPM.
