Description

Now it's time to play through our practice tune up to speed with the backing track. I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial and that you've realized what an incredible tool the power chords can be. They're of course classic sounding when they're used for riffs, which is how most people know them.

But they're also an instant bluegrass or country sound, when they're adapted to the open position. Most often I end up using them in conjunction with regular chords, sometimes because they're easier to reach for than the full chords, or sometimes because the simplicity of the sound fits in nicely between the more full chords. It can also be really cool to use them when you play with a singer, because there's such little harmonic information which leaves a ton of room for the melody to create the different moods.
