Description

What's up, it's Mike from Guitar Tricks, teaching you "You Can't Always Get What You Want" as made famous by The Rolling Stones. This is a classic 60s rock tune that shows the Stones mixing country, blues and gospel influences into an anthemic pop-rock style.

This song features 2 guitar layers. Guitar 1 is an acoustic guitar that plays the basic chord progression throughout the song. Guitar 2 is a clean electric guitar that adds an additional layer of licks and rhythms that build the arrangement.

The song uses one simple chord progression for most of the song, save for a brief interlude (or bridge) that adds drama with some climbing chords played by the piano. The song has a long, gradual building story-arc that see the dynamic levels adjusting to support the vocal storyline.

The acoustic guitar is tuned to open E, with a capo on the 8th fret. We've included a bonus lesson to show how to play these guitar parts using standard tuning.

To play this tune using only one guitar, simply play Guitar 1 all the way through.

In the following lessons, we'll talk about open E tuning, acoustic strumming approaches, dynamics, and bluesy/ country lead guitar approaches. We are in the key of C major, with a 4/4 time signature, at a tempo of 85 BPM, that gradually increases throughout the song.
