Does anyone else like dragonforce? I like the guitar, because they are amazing but the lyrics and vocals are kinda bad. Any other DF fans out there?

Dragonforce is mediocre at best. I've seen them live and they are SLOPPY as hell (just watch some on YouTube). They over-produced the crap out of the album to cover up their shoddy playing. A classic example of guitarists trying to play above their abilities. Just my two cents. Btw the vocalist is a grade-A pussy and THAT, my friend, is a fact!

It depends how your judging them. If your judging solely on live performance, then no doubt, they are not the best (by far). If your judging on their CD's/music, then its like any other band in the world....its all personal preference.

I personally do like their music and I have 2 of their CD's that I do not regret buying. I also know that they are one of the last bands I listen to that I look up to as guitar inspirations. Everything is done in the studio, and both Herman and Sam cannot actually play that good in a normal situation. Nevertheless, I like their sound, so I listen to them. For those who bash Dragonforce (like the poster above), its usually all based on the fact that they cannot actually play like they do on their CD's, or they don't like the singers voice/lyrics, or they just don't like their style of music.

agreed. i'm down with the DF and they have some epic songs. i've seen them live twice and they didn't dissapoint me at all. i have realistic expectations of what they should be doing up there, and of course they're not gonna get that studio sound. however, herman li is an exceptionally good guitar player, while totally not my style. i'm man enough to say that he's excellent, and i will enver play like him. i don't care what the studio does to his abilities...he still rocks some pretty decent balls.

that being said, i've grown out of dragonforce. the vocals are too much for me usually. either that, or its just too intense to listen to while driving to school in the morning or relaxing. i guess i'm rarely in a metal mood, and when i am, i listen to heavier stuff.

I think Dragonforce suck quite well.... The 'guitar' on the CD is usually a keyboard... which explains the let-down of a live show...

I don't know.... Anyways, DF's albums are not recorded with a keyboard, they just use alot of effects. You can't expect their live shows to be as good as the albums, that's unrealistic. The only guitar player that I know that sounds just like an album when he plays is Slash. (when he played for GnR of course). I wouldn't be judging their sloppiness when they play in concert because I bet that a very select few people can even come close to the speed and technicality of their music. I think that the music is fun to listen to, but I also think that all of their lyrics are the exact same. I only like a few of their songs, but I like those ones so much that I like the band. Most of their songs are mediocre though.

I think a lot of Yngwie Malmsteen's earlier albums sound live... As in quality wise, when he plays live, it sounds pretty much similar to them album, although he never plays his songs the same any given concert :p

If u know what I mean....

I think I get what your saying. His overall sound quality sounds like album material, but he doesn't actually play each song the same way note for note. However, he is Malmsteen after all. Thats why hes one of the best.

I saw Malmsteen in DUblin two years ago and he was one of the most technicaly perfect players I have ever seen. Vai, Petrucci and Satch are others - they can play anything at the speed of thought flawlessly.
Dragon Force sound cool and they have a lot of new sounds - yes they have ability but the vids of them playing individually on youtube are pretty cringe-worthy. They sounded like school kids playing really difficult passages that were way above their abilities - very shaky with mistakes all over the place. Not saying they are crap - just not as polished as what you hear on the cd's. Then again - they are making money - just saying there is a huge difference between them and a true 'virtuoso' like Malmsteen, Vai, Satch, etc etc.

Check out Outworld for 100% bona fide virtuosity in a power metal band - guitarist is Rusty Cooley, bassist and keyboard player are equally crazy on their instruments. Song struture is top notch too, check em out.

Rusty Cooley is also a crazy shredder. The thing that I think is important to separate is the idea of a band being great musicians, or a band that makes good music. The question is "Does anyone else like dragonforce?", not "Do you think Dragonforce is on par with the best musicians out there?". Yes I like Dragonforce, no I don't think they are as talented as they would like people to think (when it comes to PLAYING their instruments).

I never said that they were on par with the best, I was just asking if there were any other fans out there because I have seen alot of Dragonforce haters out there. I never said they were the best, and that is not my opinion at all. I think M.A.B and YJM are better shredders than they are. It was a poll to see if you like the music they make, not to have an argument about if they were good live or any of that other crap. It was meant ONLY to see if people besides me liked the music....

Exactly, but people generalize and as soon as they see the word "Dragonforce", the flaming begins.

When it comes to techinical ability Cooley is pretty much unbeatable IMO - not only is he one of the fastest players I have ever seen but the runs he plays are extremely difficult even at slow speeds. His solo album is a bit hard on the ears in places - the sheer number of notes and th espeed means that some feeling gets lost along the way but now that he is with a Outworld he seems to have tamed thing down making the shred even more impressive. Check out his signiture 7 string Dean, amazing looking axe with killer graphics.

What about Brian Carroll?(Buckethead) I find him to be one of the best on the planet. The solo to Jordan is one of the best solos ever as far as fitting the song.

Rusty Cooley is amazing technically but he gets boring after about 2 minutes. His legato is pretty much un-beatlable. I do like Outworld as a band though, I like what Rusty does rhythmically.

If you can't play your music live you shouldn't be a musician. Listen to Vai, or Satch live and it is usually better than on their records! It isn't because DF uses a lot of effects that they don't sound the same live it is because they don't hit the notes, but hey they jump around and fall over a lot.

Cooleys "Under the Influence" is what got me listening to him. It's an awesome song.
