lets have a "Best Bass Player" thing goin on. We have alot of credit going out to the guitar players (past and present), but Bass players make the guitar sound that much better ( in my opinion ).

I vote for Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead

not because he was the best, but becuase he was the most creative , in my mind.

ME!

Actually, there is no such thing as a best bassist, much like there is no best guitarist. However, I'll give my little perspective on this:

Most Technical: Probably Bill D ickens or Victor Wooten.

Most Influential: Jaco, he pretty much invented the idea of a badass bassist.

Generally badass overall: Juan Nelson (Ben Harper), Norwood Fisher (Fishbone), Les Claypool (aka: THE MAN), Dirk Lance (Incubus), John Entwistle (The Who), Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath), and of course BOOTSIE COLLINS!

vai likes belly sheehan (i can't remember how to spell the name)

i like Steve Harris, John Paul Jones, Noel Redding, and Cliff Burton is supposed to be great
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

Cliff was pretty solid, but he didn't really do anything that incredible... Unless you compare him to Newstead.

That would be Les Claypool. You can also find him playing bass for Col. Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, Sausage, Oysterhead, and even filling in with Gov't Mule from time to time.

I know Paul Carmicheal used to play w/him, don't know if he still does, it's been awhile since I bought a Holdsworth cd

What about Gary Willis from Tribal Tech?, no ones mentioned him yet.

Bobby Sheenan is the bass player admired by Via (and also one of my favourite)
He played in Blues Traveler up until a year or so ago when he died of a drug overdose in New Orleans. For those of you who think Run-Around when you hear Blues Traveler, get hold of some of their older albums like Save His Soul and hear Bobby really rip it up! That man sure knew how to groove!

Rest in peace bassman

Just saw him on tour with VAI (not Via as you people want to call him) and MAAAAAAAAN he his insane. Vai broke two strings that night, and he jumped in the spotlight doing insane solos so that Vai could get a spare guitar. Vai came back, and he started pushing him around, and Sheehan kept on playing those incredible fast lines...

Geezer played bass on ALL Black Sabbath didn't he? He wrote most of their old lyrics (since Ozzy couldn't write) and a great deal in the later years with Dio,etc.
