I was looking at a music store web site a few months ago. I remember seeing a guitar on their clearance specials, but it was too expensive for a beginner like myself. (Better to learn to play THEN get the high end stuff). Anyway, I've been searching for it again and can't find it. I had it in my mind that it was a Fender strat, silver in color, and that it had a two letter designation in it's name like "VR" or such. I'm not sure about any of these items. I do remember that it was silver, it looked like a strat, had some kind of electronics on board and claimed that it could get a dozen sounds and even imitate an accoustical guitar.

Does anyone know of ANY kind of guitar with such electronics? Did Fender make such a thing or did I get that twisted?

That sounds like a modeling style guitar to me. There is the Line 6 Variax series...

http://line6.com/variax/

And then the Fender VG Strat...

Hope that helps, and if anyone has some advice on how to convince my wife that I really need either one of those, that would be appreciated :)

Cheers,

Andy

Have been researching it a bit, and seems that there are a few theories on why it was axed (pardon the pun) Best I can tell is that it really didn't sell as well as expected and it didn't make sense dollar wise for Roland and Fender to continue on with the liscensing stuff. That and the price was a bit up there for the market.

However, reading some of the conspiracy theories on it was entertaining :)

Andy

I saw some of these on Ebay a few months back. You might want to check there if you're still wanting one.

Thanks jwb,
I'm looking at getting a used one and I will try there. Lots of reports of the modeling going out on them tho. There seem to be some more strats now called 'Roland-Ready'...have to look into them further. Also looking into the Line 6 Variax stuff. Looks weird with no pickups.

I have a friend that has had a Variax for a few years, and swears by it. He won't use it for gigs, but it is his main practice and composing guitar. I think I'll keep my eye on Craig's list and eBay for one :)

I have been looking at some of the Roland stuff. The pickup itself isn't too terribly expensive, but the hardware needed to use it is pretty pricey!
