Hi

I am planning on buying an electric soon, but I know I will mostly be playing on headphones to keep the family happy. However, I'm not exactly sure how the whole amp headphone thing works, and I'm also looking for suggestions for amp headphones as well.

Thank you!

A lot of amps and modelers have headphone jacks, so you'd just plug in there.

My only recommendation is to buy headphones that are very comfortable.

I use a pair of open-back AKG Q701's that are light and poofy. But they're pretty expensive.

(A bit of sound also leaks from them since they're open-back, but that's the type of headphones they are.)

I find other headphones get uncomfortable on my head and ears after a while.

I too am looking for some quality headphones in closed back. It's tough because stores don't carry any selection. And the reviews are all geared towards end listeners or DJ's.

I'm leaning towards the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO. The reviews are great, and they're supposed to be the most comfortable headphones ever:

https://north-america.beyerdynamic.com/dt-770-pro.html

They come in 32, 80, and 250 ohm versions. The 32 is for mobile devices, the 250 require a headphone amp, and the 80 ohm are an "all rounder". Well, my amp puts out loud volume through the headphone jack (I'm currently using some cheap old sony 24 ohm headphones). I never turn the volume past 1/4 with the gain at the middle.

I'm thinking the 80 ohm because I can crank my amp up a little more, and still be able to hear my aux-in from my desktop pc or phone. Which ohm would you go with to get the best sound out of my Orange amp headphone output?

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but the OP might want to consider these headphones too.

Thanks for the tips. I've heard good things about these as well. Audio Technica ATH-M50X

The Audio Technicas were on my short list. But I didn't like the looks of those swivel speakers, I would think it would get annoying having to straighten them out every time you put them on.

I wound up getting the Beyerdynamic DT-770s about a week ago. I got them in 80 ohm. My amp has plenty of juice to power them, same with my computer sound card. They can even run off my phone although I got them primarly to run off my practice amp.

I like them. They have a nice balanced sound, great clarity/detail, and are very comfortable. I LOVE the looks of them too, like they came out of the 1970's.
