Hi everyone I've been trying to learn to play guitar for the last 2 weeks using the beginner lessons by Linda mccormick, which has been fun I haven't finished it just yet but thought I would have a crack at learning runaway train by soul asylum.

Im really confused in lesson 5 the tutor says 2 bars of each chord which she does. But when looking at the notation is there 4 bars on each row of the notation sheet? Or am I reading this completely wrong is it 2 bars on each line then down to the next line and then the same with the next two lines below and then do they go back up to the top and start all over again. Sorry if this sounds confusing I'm just really struggling with this. I have attached an image of the notation.

Many Thanks

Gary

What you have posted there is 2 bars (measures) on each chord. That single vertical line separates one measure from the next.

Could someone please advise me how the notation should be read? I have attached two screenshots that I have edited with my phone so it doesn't look great to be honest.

I'm still a little confused thank you for your reply. So would I play the two measures on the same row together and then move to the next line below to play the next 2 measure in another chord?

Yes, two measures straight across on one line. Then the two measures on the next line, etc.

They go in this order, same as reading normal writing.

Brilliant thank you for that advice one last thing if you dont mind could you confirm if i'm reading this correct. You see where the notes are joined up where i have drew the arrow does that mean that i copy the previous note for example should i strum the guitar in this pattern.

down, down, up, down, up, down, up

or like this

down, down, up, up, down, up

If the first pattern is correct is the joining upside down smile of the two notes, always a repeat of the previous note?

Thank you for your help.

No. That curved line joing the notes means Hold that note, do not strum it again.

Strum pattern here is Down Down Up (Hold) Up Down Up
