Description

Iron Maiden tunes have some of the most memorable riffs in metal history, and a common feature of the riffs are single note melodies that are woven into a searing power chord progression.

A typical motif that Maiden might use is something like the example in E minor in the video. Adding single note motifs like this can really add a whole new dimension to your riffs. They can convey a majestic almost horn like quality that adds to the epic nature of the music, not to mention how catchy and memorable it makes the riff as a bonus.

You'll find many examples of this throughout Maiden's career. Maiden usually picked notes from the minor scale or the pentatonic scale to create these motifs. They also had plenty of songs that featured riffs composed entirely of single note melodies, as is demonstrated in this lesson.
