Description

This song features 4 guitar layers. Guitar 1 is an acoustic guitar layer that provides the backbone of the tune. Guitar 2 is a rhythm electric guitar that largely doubles the acoustic for a fuller sound. Guitar 3 is a clean electric guitar that adds some higher arpeggiations to the chord progression. Guitar 4 is the lead guitar that adds the signature hook, fills, a rock style solo, and a melodic slide solo in the outro.

This tune also features piano and pedal steel providing a dense mix, typical of modern country productions. It has a lot of texture and dynamic changes that closely follow the lyric and story arc. Most of these changes in texture are immediate. Some are more gradual. This is a great opportunity to learn to pay attention to arrangement elements.

The song starts out at a high dynamic with the signature hook played by Guitar 4. The verse comes in with a lower dynamic, with the acoustic holding it down with some solid strumming. The prechorus builds the dynamic with some sweet sounding arpeggiations from Guitar 3. The chorus comes in big with Guitars 1&2 providing a thick rhythm foundation while Guitar 3 adds some higher arpeggiations.

The signature hook is revisited several times throughout the tune, and Guitar 4 adds some tasty fills to the second verse. The guitar solo has a killer rock approach, leading into the high dynamic of the last chorus. There is also piano breakdown after the last chorus that builds back up into a huge sounding outro ending complete with melodic slide guitar!

To play this tune using only one guitar, play Guitar 1 all the way through.

In the following lessons, we'll talk about dynamics, chord arpeggiations, solid rhythm strumming, and modern country lead guitar techniques. We are in the key of E major, with a 4/4 time signature, at a tempo of 75 BPM.
