Description

Timbre (pronounced “TAM-ber”) is the unique, distinguishing characteristic or quality of a sound made by a musical instrument. Timbre can be measured in physical, quantitative, scientific terms. This 74;can be done by means of observing the waveform any given sound source makes on an oscilloscope. Timbre can be tricky to describe. But it's what we are doing when we discuss the fact that an acoustic guitar sounds different from an electric guitar. Or that a clean guitar tone sounds different from an overdriven guitar tone.

Tone is often used in place of the term timbre by guitarists.

Timbre is sometimes the biggest factor determining an individual’s reaction to a piece of music.

Certain timbres are typically associated with certain styles of guitar playing or genres of music.
