Description

In this lesson we'll harmonize the minor scale in 3rds. We're going to use only notes from the minor scale to combine together. A harmony of a 3rd combines 2 notes of the scale that are an interval of a 3rd apart. Start on the root note C, the 1st scale degree, go past the D, 2nd, go to the E-flat, the 3rd. So, we count three notes and use the first as the starting point and the 3rd as the target.

C - skip D - E-flat

That's an interval of a 3rd. In this case those notes are 3 frets or 1 and a half whole steps apart. This is an interval of a minor 3rd.

Harmonizing the 2nd scale degree, the D, results in: D-E-F. So, the next harmony is:

D - skip E - F

This is also an interval of a 3rd. However, in this case those notes are 3 frets or 1 and a half steps apart. This is an interval of a minor 3rd.

These are the 2 possible flavors of 3rd intervals: major and minor. Every note of the minor scale that we harmonize will be either a major or minor 3rd. This results in the following harmony pattern.

  • C - E-flat = minor 3rd

  • D - F = minor 3rd

  • E-flat - G = major 3rd

  • F - A-flat = minor 3rd

  • G - B-flat = minor 3rd

  • A-flat - C = major 3rd

  • B - D = minor 3rd
